FS JNT Summer Training Program

PARTICIPANTS: The JNT Summer Training Program is open to all skiers who will be entering 9th grade or older next year, whether or not you plan to join FS JNT for the 2018 season.

COACHES: Weekday practices are coached by JNT coaches, program alums, and Dartmouth strength and conditioning interns (Weds & Fri strength sessions).  Weekend overdistance sessions are planned and coordinated by JNT families.

PURPOSE: The FS JNT Summer Training Program is designed to prepare skiers to meet their winter season racing goals.  Athletes learn the fundamental elements of ski-specific training, build the endurance and strength base that is required for success on skis next winter, and have fun with friends and teammates doing a variety of ski-related activities.  The program brings together athletes, coaches, and often program alums who are skiing in college for workouts best accomplished with others.  Athletes are expected to train daily throughout the summer, complementing the intensity and strength focus of team training with distance training and race opportunities on their own (or coordinated with teammates, family, friends).

SCHEDULE: Practices are held early and late in the day both to accommodate work schedules and to train during the cooler parts of the day.  Note that practices that will be attended by fewer than four athletes will be cancelled.

From late June (end of school) through mid-August (beginning of fall pre-seasons):

  • MON: 5-7pm – rollerskiing (Etna)
  • WEDS: 7-8 am – strength (Oak Hill or Ray School)
  • THURS: 5-7pm – foot-based intervals (Hanover/Lyme/Norwich) some weeks, track workouts (Hanover High) others
  • FRI: 7-8 am – strength (Oak Hill or Ray School) [add-on; additional fee]
  • SAT or SUN morning: family-organized 2-3 hour trail hike/run

In addition to these training sessions, we strongly encourage participation in the weekly timed 5k “fun runs” at Thetford Academy on Tuesday evenings (6pm start) and the Western NH Trail Running Series (mostly Saturdays).  Coaches may or may not be present at these events, and any team organization for these is provided by parents and athletes.

The team will join/encourage participation in some annual events organized by others as that week’s long workout – even though they are not officially JNT sessions (e.g. The Prouty, Dartmouth’s Moosilauke time trial, the low-to-high of Lyme on July 4th).

EQUIPMENT: JNT-owned rollerskis are usually available for first-time participants to borrow for the summer.  Returning JNT skiers are expected to have their own rollerskis. Each participant should have classic and skate poles fitted with rollerski ferrules, dryland poles (short – old/heavy poles are fine), running shoes, bike helmet, water bottle/carrier, watch, and non-cotton training clothes.

ROLLERSKI SAFETY REQUIREMENTS: Every athlete must wear a hi-viz shirt for rollerskiing. Blinking lights attached to helmet and/or drinkbelt are highly recommended. Omer & Bob’s has an affordable helmet-mount light in stock.

REGISTRATION: Please let us know details of your summer via this quick survey (link at the bottom of this page, too).  We’ll contact you when official registration opens.

PROGRAM FEE: JNT Summer Training Program (M, W, Th): $225. JNT Summer Program (M, W, Th) + additional weekly strength session (F): $300. (Financial aid is available. Contact Ford Sayre’s bookkeeper for information: heather@fordsayre.org.)
